Easter concert: The Creation by Haydn

This years easter concert with the Arctic Philharmonic is the Oratorium by Franz Joseph Haydn - the piece depicting the creation of the world.

Performed in Tromsø domkirke
thursday march 22, 7 pm
friday march 23, 7 pm

Franz Joseph Haydn wrote his masterly oratorio in 1797 and 1798. The work depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the bible and in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost. Haydn was inspired to write the oratorio during his visits to England when he heard performances of Handel’s popular music.

The last time Haydn heard the work performed was a year before he died. An ill Haydn was carried into the concert hall on an armchair, the audience broke into spontaneous applause and Haydn felt the need to say something. Smiling and pointing upwards, he is reputed to have said: “Not from me; everything comes from up there!”
