Vokal Nord is a chamber choir based in Tromsø, Norway. The ensemble is known and recognised for their characteristic sound based on ethnic music from the north, combined with repertoire from the baroque period.
The ensemble was established in Tromsø in 1997, when a group of singers came together with the ambition to form a vocal ensemble on an international level. At first, the repertoire focused on the baroque period. Soon the choir also included contemporary music inspired by traditional folk music from the northern parts of Scandinavia, especially the sami vocal traditions.
Vokal Nord often collaborate with different orchestras in order to perform music from the baroque period. Over the past few years, they have performed Handel’s Messiah and Bach´s St. Johns passion together with the Artctic symphony orchestra (NOSO), conducted by Herbert Böck. Together with the russian baroque ensemble Pratum Integrum the choir has held performances both in Russia and Norway, playing rare material from the baroque composer Platti.
Vokal Nord has collaborated with many different conductors from all over Europe. Our latest collaborations include Herbert Böck (Austria), Reza Agamir (Norway), Øystein Jæger (Norway), Henrik Ødegaard (Norway), Martin Baker (Great Britain). Previous years collaborations include Elitsa Simonska (Norway/ Bulgaria), Elisabeth Holte (Norway), Anna Jelstad (Norway), Nacho Rodriguez (Spain), Geir Lysne (Norway) Gunnar Eriksson (Sweden), Carl Høgset (Norway), Grete Pedersen (Norway), Magnar Mangersnes, (Norway), Eric Ericson(Sweden), Jesper Grove Jørgensen (Denmark) U Gen Ir (Russia), Erik Westberg (Sweden), Evgenij Gurev (Russia), Pier Paulo Scattolin (Italy), Tora Augestad (Norway), Thorbjørn Dyrud (Norway/Sweden), Jochen A. Modess (Germany) and Robin Ticciati (Great Britain).
Ensembles we have collaborated with include Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra (NOSO), the Russian baroque ensemble Pratum Integrum, the german baroque orchestra Concerto Farinelli and the Norwegian baroque ensemble Brøstadbotn Barokkband , directed by oboist Anna Starr.
